Alexander, Janet, and Isabell Bullock

Janet and Isabelle Bullock were little sisters of Alexander Bullock (our 4th great-grandfather). The Bullock family, consisting then of James and Mary Hill Bullock and their children Alexander and Janet, joined the church in 1840 in Essa Township, Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada. They moved to Nauvoo in 1841 when Alexander was 3 and Janet 2. They lived in Nauvoo for 5 years, remember seeing the prophet Joseph Smith, and were living in Nauvoo during his martyrdom.

The Bullock family moved with the early saints to Winter Quarters in 1846 to escape persecutions in Illinois and Missouri. They suffered greatly in Winter Quarters for 18 months of exposure to the cold, sickness, and lack of food. Janet who was 7 years old and Isabell age 2, who was born in Nauvoo, became sick and died that winter of scurvy, then called the lothsome "black leg" disease.

There is a memorial dedicated to the hundreds of saints that died during Winter Quarters and that were buried in the Mormon Cemetery near Florence, Nebraska. The Winter Quarters Nebraska temple is also built on this same property.

Alexander Bullock was 8 years old when his sisters passed away and his family suffered the terrible conditions in Winter Quarters. He was baptized that spring by his father on the 27th of May 1847 in the Missouri River.
